What is urinary incontinence?

Urinary incontinence is a common problem that involves a loss of bladder control. This causes urine to leak out at inappropriate times, creating feelings of embarrassment and shame and even limiting daily activities.

Incontinence varies in type and severity, ranging from occasional urine leakage to powerful urges to urinate frequently. The main types of urinary incontinence include:

Stress incontinence

Urinary stress incontinence happens when urine leaks out when you have a cough, sneeze, laugh or exercise.

Urge incontinence

Urge incontinence causes a sudden, unstoppable need to urinate followed by involuntary urine loss. This type of incontinence may disrupt daily activities and prevent a restful night’s sleep.

It is also possible to have mixed incontinence when more than one type affects you at the same time.

What causes urinary incontinence?

Urinary incontinence is not a disease in and of itself, but a symptom of an underlying issue. Many women experience some degree of incontinence during or after normal life changes, such as:

  • Pregnancy
  • Childbirth
  • Menopause
  • Hysterectomy

Other possible causes of persistent urinary incontinence include conditions such as diabetes or cancer.

When should I see an OB/GYN for incontinence?

If urinary incontinence is interfering with sleep, ability to exercise, or quality of life in general, it is worth discussing treatment options with Dr. Schumacher. As a caring OB/GYN with extensive experience in women’s health, Dr. Schumacher understands this is a delicate subject and strives to make you feel comfortable as he addresses your needs.

Just because urinary incontinence is especially common among women going through life changes such as menopause does not mean you need to suffer from it. Dr. Schumacher offers a variety of nonsurgical, pain-free treatments that target the cause of urinary incontinence.

How do you treat urinary incontinence?

First, Dr. Schumacher performs a thorough exam and reviews your medical history to determine the cause of your incontinence.

In cases where incontinence is due to a decline in estrogen, Dr. Schumacher may recommend vaginal rejuvenation with MonaLisa Touch or bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT).

If an overactive bladder is the cause of incontinence, he may suggest bladder retraining exercises as well as prescription medication for treatment.
